Client Brief:

The clients wanted a new home that that would take advantage of the surrounding views, create shaded areas for outdoor living, and offer functional spaces for activities such as yoga and swimming, all while connecting with the natural beauty of the site.

Location:

Situated on the northern edge of Scottsdale, Arizona, the property lies in the shadow of Lone Mountain in the Sonoran Desert. The area is characterized by its striking geology, including massive 12-million-year-old boulders. The home needed to respect the natural landscape and create a comfortable environment in the desert climate while providing views of both Lone Mountain and the distant mountains of Cave Creek.

Design Solution:

Inspired by the simple yet powerful form of a boulder outcrop on the site, "Boulders" is anchored by two bedroom wings, with a large cantilevered roof spanning between them to provide shade for the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The cantilevered roof incorporates openings that allow diffused light into the patio and facilitate natural ventilation by allowing hot air to escape. The bedroom wings are rotated at 90 degrees from each other, forming an L-shaped plan that creates a central courtyard for outdoor living and defines two primary views: one to Lone Mountain and the other to the distant mountains of Cave Creek. A yoga/pool pavilion is located at the edge of one bedroom wing, featuring a timber screen that filters the soft morning light for yoga practice. The pavilion area includes lockers and a hidden outdoor shower, complete with an oculus view to the desert sky, creating a serene space for reflection and relaxation. Inside, large sliding glass doors connect the great room to the pool courtyard, extending the indoor living area outdoors. Clerestory windows on both the north and south sides of the home flood the interior with natural light throughout the day, while the dark sky location allows for stargazing from the courtyard or through the high windows in the great room.

Result:

"Boulders" respects its desert surroundings while offering the modern conveniences needed for daily life, all within a stunning natural setting. The design connects the living spaces with the outdoors, providing shaded areas, expansive views, and serene spaces for activities like yoga and swimming.
